How to Make Sculpey Clay

Polymer clay can be baked in a conventional oven.

Sculpey is the name brand of a popular type of polymer clay. Polymer clay is pliable and hardens when baked in an oven. A kiln is not required. This clay can hold an impression and can be cut, shaped, wrapped, stenciled and painted. Food coloring or dye can be added while kneading the clay. Sculpey clay projects could be jewelry, dolls, 3-D paintings, cars, animals, a hand or footprint keepsake and magnets.

things you'll need:

• 2 cups cornstarch
• 2 cups baking soda
• 1 1/4 cups cold water
• Food coloring or dye (optional)

     Combine cornstarch and baking soda in a saucepan over medium heat.
   • 2
     Stir in cold water, slowly. The mixture should be smooth.
   • 3
     Stir constantly while the mixture thickens. It should resemble instant mashed potatoes.

     Dump the clay onto a clean counter or plate. Cover with a damp towel.
   • 5
     Knead the mixture when it is warm or cooled. Add food color or dye at this stage if desired. Work the color into all parts of the clay for an all-over color or partially for a two-toned design. The clay is now ready to be shaped and then baked in the oven.
